The new Mr. Gay Brazil has officially been picked this past month, and he is Thiago Silvestre of Mato Grasso. Mr. Gay Brazil is a contest that started in the second half of 2007, in order to give more attention to the gay community in Brazil. One of the most favored parts of the competition is the swim suit contest, which seems like it is all about contestants showing off their bodies, but that’s because it is! This competition was inspired by the São Paulo LGBT Pride Parade, which is known to be one of the largest parades in the world, even by the Guinness Book of World Records. The parade has a month’s worth of events, and is going on to its 14th parade next year. The parade started in 1997 with only 2,000 people, and this year it was 3.1 million people, so that is a huge growth. Each parade has a theme and slogan, this past year it was “Without Homophobia, More Citizenship!” If you’re even in Brazil, a real fun time to be there is the end of the summer, when all these events take place.
